How does this medication function? What benefits can I expect?

Ketotifen is categorized as an antiallergic and asthma preventative medication. It is often combined with other treatments to help manage mild allergic asthma in children.

As an antihistamine, ketotifen alleviates asthma symptoms by diminishing the body's reaction to allergens—substances that trigger allergic responses—which can lead to sudden asthma attacks.

Your doctor may have recommended this medication for other conditions not mentioned in these informational articles. Additionally, some formulations of this medication may not be suitable for every condition discussed. If you have not talked to your doctor about this or are uncertain about the reason for your child's medication, consult your healthcare provider. Do not discontinue giving this medication to your child without your doctor’s advice.

Avoid administering this medication to anyone else, even if they present similar symptoms to your child, as it could be dangerous for individuals not prescribed this treatment by their doctor.

Are there any special warnings or precautions for this medication?

Before starting any medication, inform your doctor of any medical conditions, allergies, medications you are taking, whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and any other relevant health information, as these factors may influence how you should take this medication.

If you have diabetes, note that the syrup form contains 4 grams of carbohydrates per 5 mL. There have been rare cases of low blood cell counts in patients taking both antidiabetes drugs and ketotifen. If you have concerns, consult your doctor.

Diabetes:

Ketotifen may induce drowsiness. Parents and guardians should monitor children for drowsiness during the initial stages of treatment, and children should avoid dangerous activities until you know how the medication affects them.

Drowsiness/Revised alertness:

Existing asthma medications (like b2-agonists such as salbutamol; sodium cromoglycate; corticosteroids such as beclomethasone, budesonide, and fluticasone) should not be abruptly discontinued when starting ketotifen. Adhere closely to your doctor's instructions.

Other asthma medications:

Ketotifen might elevate the risk of seizures, especially if your child has a seizure history. If you or your child have a history of seizures, consult your doctor regarding the potential effects of this medication on the condition, how the condition might influence its dosage and efficacy, and whether any special monitoring is necessary.

Seizures:

Ketotifen is not recommended for individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
