How does this medication function? What benefits can it provide for me?
Ketotifen is categorized under antiallergic agents and asthma prophylactics. It is utilized alongside other medications to manage mild allergic asthma in children.
This medication acts as an antiallergy treatment, helping alleviate asthma symptoms by diminishing the body’s reaction to allergens (substances that trigger allergic responses). These allergens can frequently initiate an acute asthma attack.
Your doctor may have recommended this medication for other conditions not detailed in the drug information. Additionally, certain formulations of this medication may not be applicable for all the conditions mentioned. If you haven't discussed the reasons for using this medication with your doctor or are uncertain about it, please consult your healthcare provider. Do not discontinue this medication for your child without first consulting with your doctor.
This medication should not be given to anyone else, even if they exhibit similar symptoms as your child. It could be harmful for individuals to use this medication without a doctor's prescription.

Are there any additional precautions or warnings for this medication?
Before beginning this medication, it is essential to inform your doctor of any existing medical conditions or allergies, medications you are currently taking, whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and any other important health information. These factors may influence how you should take this medication.
Diabetes: If you have diabetes, be aware that the syrup version of this medication contains 4 g of carbohydrates per 5 mL dose. There have also been rare cases of decreased blood cell counts in individuals taking both ketotifen and antidiabetes medications. Consult your doctor if you have any concerns.
Drowsiness/reduced alertness: This medication may induce drowsiness. Parents and guardians should note that children might experience drowsiness during the initial stages of treatment. They should refrain from engaging in potentially dangerous activities until the effects of this medication are fully understood.
Other asthma medications: Existing asthma treatments (e.g., b2-agonists like salbutamol; sodium cromoglycate; corticosteroids such as beclomethasone, budesonide, and fluticasone) should not be abruptly reduced when therapy with ketotifen starts. Follow your doctor’s guidance closely.
Seizure risk: Ketotifen may heighten the risk of seizures, especially if your child has a seizure history. If you or your child have experienced seizures, consult your doctor about how this medication might impact that condition, how the condition may influence dosing and effectiveness, and whether any special monitoring is required.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Ketotifen is not to be used by anyone who is pregnant or nursing.
