Tesamorelin is synthesized using growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF).

This medication is utilized to decrease excess abdominal fat associated with certain HIV treatments, a condition known as lipodystrophy.

Tesamorelin is not intended for weight loss and should not be administered for obesity treatment.

Tesamorelin (Tesamorelin for injection) is specifically indicated for the reduction of surplus abdominal fat in HIV-positive patients suffering from lipodystrophy.

Usage Limitations:

  • The long-term safety and potential cardiovascular benefits of Tesamorelin have not been evaluated, making it crucial to carefully decide whether to continue treatment in patients who do not exhibit significant efficacy, as assessed by reductions in visceral adipose tissue measured through waist circumference or CT scans.
  • Tesamorelin is not approved for weight loss management (has a weight-neutral effect).
  • There is no evidence that Tesamorelin enhances adherence to anti-retroviral therapies in HIV-positive individuals.
  • General Dosing Guidelines:

The recommended dosage of Tesamorelin is 2 mg administered subcutaneously once daily.

The preferred injection site is the abdomen, and it’s advisable to rotate injection sites within this area. Avoid injecting into areas of scar tissue, bruises, or the navel.

    Reconstitution Instructions:

Tesamorelin must be reconstituted using the provided diluent.

To reconstitute a 2 mg vial of Tesamorelin, add 2.1 mL of diluent and gently roll the vial in your hands for 30 seconds without shaking.

Comprehensive reconstitution guidelines can be found in the INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE leaflet included with the Tesamorelin and diluent packages.

After reconstitution, administer Tesamorelin immediately and dispose of any unused solution. If it is not used right away, discard the reconstituted solution. Do not freeze or refrigerate it.

    Administration:

Always visually inspect the reconstituted Tesamorelin solution for any particles or discoloration before use, whenever possible. The injection should only be performed if the solution is clear, colorless, and free of particulate matter.

Tesamorelin should be injected subcutaneously into the abdominal skin, with sites rotated to different areas. Avoid areas of scar tissue, bruises, or the navel.
