Salbutamol, commonly referred to as albuterol, is a medication that relaxes the medium and large airways within the lungs. It is prescribed for managing asthma, including asthma attacks, exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Additionally, it can be used to treat elevated potassium levels in the blood. Ventolin, the brand name for salbutamol, is typically administered through an inhaler or nebulizer but is also available in tablet and intravenous forms. The inhaled version usually takes effect within 15 minutes and its effects last between two to six hours.

Common side effects of salbutamol include tremors, headaches, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, and anxiety. More severe side effects may involve increased bronchospasm, irregular heart rhythms, and low potassium levels in the blood. While it can be utilized during pregnancy and breastfeeding, the safety during these periods is not fully established. Salbutamol is classified as a short-acting β2 adrenergic receptor agonist, which helps to relax the smooth muscles in the airways.

Medical Uses

Ventolin is primarily used to treat bronchospasms caused by various triggers, including allergic reactions and exercise, along with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is one of the most commonly used medications in rescue inhalers, acting as a short-term bronchodilator for alleviating asthma attacks. As a β2 agonist, salbutamol is also employed in obstetrics; intravenous salbutamol can serve as a tocolytic agent to relax the uterus and delay premature labor. Although it was once preferred over other medications like atosiban and ritodrine, its use has largely diminished in favor of nifedipine, a calcium channel blocker that is more effective and better tolerated when taken orally.

Ventolin is also used to treat acute hyperkalemia, as it promotes the movement of potassium into cells, thereby reducing blood potassium levels.

Adverse Effects

The most frequently reported side effects include fine tremors, anxiety, headaches, muscle cramps, dry mouth, and palpitations. Other potential symptoms may encompass rapid heart rate (tachycardia), irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), skin flushing, rare instances of myocardial ischemia, and sleep or behavioral disturbances. Though rare, significant allergic reactions can occur, including paradoxical bronchospasms, hives (urticaria), angioedema, low blood pressure, and fainting. High doses or prolonged use may lead to low potassium levels (hypokalemia), which can be particularly concerning for patients with kidney issues or those taking certain diuretics and xanthine derivatives.

Warning: Keep this medication out of reach of children. Intended for adults only.
