What is Levofloxacin?

Levofloxacin is an antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class that combats bacterial infections in the body. It is utilized to treat various types of bacterial infections and may also be employed for individuals who have been exposed to anthrax or certain forms of the plague.

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics can lead to severe or debilitating side effects. Levofloxacin should only be prescribed for infections that cannot be effectively treated with a safer antibiotic.

Additionally, levofloxacin may be prescribed for purposes not detailed in this medication guide.

Important Information

Levofloxacin can lead to serious side effects, including issues with tendons, nerve damage, significant mood or behavioral changes, and low blood sugar levels.

You should discontinue levofloxacin and immediately contact your doctor if you experience symptoms such as headache, increased hunger, irritability, numbness, tingling, burning sensations, confusion, agitation, paranoia, memory or concentration difficulties, suicidal thoughts, or sudden pain or movement issues in any of your joints.

In rare instances, levofloxacin may harm your aorta, potentially resulting in severe bleeding or death. Seek emergency medical assistance if you experience intense, persistent pain in your chest, abdomen, or back.

How Should I Take Levofloxacin?

Adhere to all instructions on your prescription label and review all medication guides or informational sheets. Take the medication exactly as directed.

Administer levofloxacin with water at the same time every day. Ensure to consume additional fluids to support kidney function while taking this medication.

You can take levofloxacin tablets either with or without food.

Complete the full course of levofloxacin as prescribed, even if you start feeling better quickly. Missing doses may elevate your risk of developing a medication-resistant infection. Note that levofloxacin is ineffective against viral infections such as the flu or the common cold.

Do not share levofloxacin with anyone else.

This medication may interfere with drug-screening urine tests, possibly leading to false results. Inform the laboratory personnel that you are taking levofloxacin.

Store the medication at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
