Stanozolol, commonly referred to as Winstrol, is a 17-alpha-alkylated variant of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) characterized by low androgenic effects but significant anabolic properties. Initially developed in 1962 by Sterling-Winthrop Laboratories, a U.S.-based global pharmaceutical company, it aimed to boost lymphocyte levels and enhance CD8+ cell counts while reducing CD4+ and CD3+ cell numbers in postmenopausal women for osteoporosis treatment. This functionality may also be beneficial for managing autoimmune diseases. Additionally, Winstrol is effective for treating hereditary angioedema and can affect certain immunological functions.
Currently, Stanozolol is available in two formats: tablets and injectable forms. It is the second most popular oral steroid, surpassed only by methandienone. The lifespan of Stanozolol tablets is relatively short, lasting around 9 hours, particularly compared to the injectable form. The injectable version differs from other anabolic steroids in that it comes as an aqueous suspension containing fine steroid particles, rather than as an oil-based solution of an esterified compound. This results in unique pharmacokinetics that do not conform to the typical half-life pattern, providing a prolonged effect that gradually diminishes over time. It can last at least a week, and individual particles may linger at the injection site for extended durations. Pharmacom Labs has developed an oil-based Stanozolol that can be blended with other oils and eliminates the drawbacks of the suspension form. All three formats exhibit good bioavailability.
Despite being a DHT-based compound, Stanozolol's effects are significantly milder than that of DHT itself. Since it cannot convert into estradiol, users do not need aromatase inhibitors, which means it does not cause water retention; in fact, it has a diuretic effect. As such, instead of a bulky appearance, Winstrol promotes a lean, defined physique without excess subcutaneous water retention, making it an excellent choice for cutting cycles aimed at shedding water and fat while achieving a well-defined, muscular look. These traits have made Stanozolol popular among athletes in strength and speed events, such as track and field.
For bodybuilders, Stanozolol offers a noteworthy advantage: it significantly lowers sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels, enhancing the efficacy of other steroids used in conjunction. This increase in SHBG results in higher levels of biologically active free testosterone in circulation. Consequently, it is advisable to stack Stanozolol with testosterone for optimal effect. Another consideration is that Winstrol may more readily increase tendon brittleness compared to other anabolic steroids, as it can deplete joint fluid, potentially leading to joint discomfort and injury. Both tablet and injection forms of Stanozolol have also been associated with adverse changes in cholesterol levels, so monitoring blood lipid profiles during use is recommended.
In conclusion, Stanozolol is typically suggested for athletes who have adequate muscle mass but wish to enhance endurance and improve muscle definition and hardness.
