Human Growth Hormone (HGH), commonly referred to as somatotropin or somatropin, is a peptide hormone that promotes growth, cell reproduction, and regeneration in humans and various animals. It functions as a mitogen, acting specifically on certain cell types. HGH consists of a single-chain polypeptide made up of 191 amino acids, produced, stored, and released by somatotropic cells in the lateral wings of the anterior pituitary gland. Its release is influenced by several factors, including diet and physical activity.
HGH encourages the growth of body cells, leading to increases in both size and the rate of cell division. It also facilitates the transport of amino acids across cell membranes and enhances the conversion of these acids into proteins, resulting in anabolic effects that contribute to muscle growth. Additionally, HGH helps cells reduce their usual carbohydrate consumption while increasing fat utilization. Studies have shown that doses as low as 0.028 iu/kg daily for 24 weeks can lead to reduced body fat and increased lean muscle mass while also stimulating the production of IGF-1.
In medicine, HGH is utilized to address growth disorders in children and hormone deficiencies in adults. Research consistently highlights the following beneficial effects of adjusting HGH levels:
Moreover, various studies, particularly in patients with HGH deficiency, indicate HGH's significant impact on mental and emotional health, as well as energy levels. Adults lacking HGH often experience higher depression rates compared to those with normal levels.
HGH has also been analyzed in relation to cognitive abilities, particularly learning and memory. It appears to enhance cognitive function in humans and could be beneficial for individuals with cognitive impairments due to HGH deficiency.
In its capacity as an anabolic substance, HGH has been misused by athletes since at least 1982. While it can effectively promote muscle gain, it is relatively less effective for strength enhancements. Competitors in the 1970s and especially in the 1980s started showcasing a refined physique with well-defined muscles that mirrored classical sculptures. It is reasonable to assume these individuals were not significantly increasing their cardiovascular activities or protein intake.
HGH tends to demonstrate more pronounced effects and benefits when combined with a steroid cycle rather than when used alone. Therefore, it is typically recommended for cutting cycles aimed at achieving lean muscle and fat loss.
