Oxymetholone, commonly referred to as anapolon or anadrol, is a potent synthetic steroid that is a 17-alpha-alkylated derivative of dihydrotestosterone. It was originally developed to treat osteoporosis and anemia, as well as to promote muscle growth in malnourished and weakened individuals. The American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved oxymetholone for human use. However, with the introduction of non-steroidal medications that effectively treat anemia and osteoporosis, anapolon's popularity declined, leading Syntex and other manufacturers to stop producing the drug by 1993.

In terms of its effects, oxymetholone is most comparable to methandienone. Like methandienone, it facilitates significant muscle growth and enhances strength, but much of the weight gained is due to water retention, which can result in elevated blood pressure during use.

Due to its ability to affect hemoglobin levels and increase blood volume, oxymetholone can lead to a powerful ‘pump’ effect for athletes. However, this can complicate training, as muscles may experience soreness almost immediately following heavy sets.

As a derivative of dihydrotestosterone, oxymetholone has a chemical structure that does not aromatize. Although it doesn’t convert directly to estradiol, it does exhibit notable estrogenic properties. It’s important to note that only antiestrogens can address these estrogenic side effects since aromatase inhibitors are ineffective in this situation.

Some believe that the estrogenic effects of oxymetholone may be related to progestogenic activity, similar to nandrolones, resulting in comparable side effects. Nevertheless, medical research has indicated that oxymetholone does not display any progestogenic activity.
