Nandrolone, also referred to as 19-nortestosterone or nandrolone decanoate, is an anabolic steroid derived from testosterone that may occur in insignificant amounts in the human body following intense or extended physical exertion.
The synthetic version of nandrolone was created in the 1950s, but it wasn't until 1962 that it became available for purchase in the form of decanoate under the brand name Deca-Durabolin, produced by Organon. It was used to treat conditions such as postoperative muscle loss, osteoporosis, breast cancer, malnutrition, burns, and specific types of anemia.
Thanks to its chemical structure, nandrolone is only minimally converted to estrogen, exhibiting about 20% of testosterone's aromatizing activity. However, its significant concern lies not in its estrogenic effects but in its strong progestogenic properties, which are roughly 20% of those of progesterone. By binding to progestogenic receptors in the pituitary gland, nandrolone stimulates prolactin production, mimicking some effects of estradiol. To mitigate these side effects, it is advisable to keep prolactin inhibitors like cabergoline accessible during a nandrolone cycle.
In the realms of sports and bodybuilding, nandrolone has gained recognition for its capacity to enhance both the quantity and quality of muscle.
