Oxymetholone, also referred to as anapolon or anadrol, is an extreme synthetic steroid that is a 17-alpha-alkylated derivative of dihydrotestosterone. It was initially developed to treat osteoporosis and anemia, as well as to promote muscle growth in patients who are malnourished or weakened. The drug has been approved by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for human use. However, following the introduction of effective non-steroidal alternatives for treating anemia and osteoporosis, anapolon's popularity declined, leading Syntex and other manufacturers to discontinue its production by 1993.
In terms of performance, oxymetholone is quite similar to methandienone, inducing not only substantial muscle bulking but also a significant boost in strength. However, much of the weight gained during its use results from water retention, which can cause elevated blood pressure during cycles.
Oxymetholone's capacity to affect hemoglobin levels and increase blood volume can lead to a pronounced pump effect for athletes, which can complicate training since muscles may feel sore shortly after intense workouts.
As a derivative of dihydrotestosterone, oxymetholone has a chemical structure that avoids aromatization. While it does not convert directly to estradiol, it displays considerable estrogenic properties. Consequently, only anti-estrogens can effectively address estrogenic side effects, since aromatase inhibitors are not effective in this case.
Some believe that the estrogenic effects of oxymetholone might be related to progestogenic activity, similar to what is seen with nandrolones, leading to similar side effects. However, research has indicated that oxymetholone does not exhibit progestogenic activity.
Pharmacom Labs has developed an injectable form of this steroid. Due to its bypass of the liver's first pass metabolism, this version offers greater bioavailability (i.e., effectiveness) and reduced hepatotoxicity compared to the oral formulation.
