What is bromocriptine (Parlodel)?

Parlodel, which contains bromocriptine, is prescribed to manage specific conditions resulting from hormonal imbalances characterized by elevated prolactin levels in the blood (hyperprolactinemia). Symptoms can include delayed sexual development in teenagers. In women, this may lead to missed menstrual cycles, diminished libido, hot flashes, infertility, or unexpected production and leaking of breast milk. Men may experience breast enlargement, lower libido, reduced facial or body hair, and muscle loss. Parlodel is also indicated for these issues when linked to brain tumors that produce prolactin.

Additionally, Parlodel can be utilized alongside surgery or radiation in the treatment of acromegaly, a disorder caused by a pituitary gland tumor that generates excessive growth hormone. It is also effective in alleviating symptoms of Parkinson's disease, such as stiffness, tremors, muscle spasms, and poor motor control.

What are the key points I should know about Parlodel?

Parlodel should not be used if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, high blood pressure due to pregnancy (such as eclampsia or preeclampsia), or if you've recently given birth and have a history of coronary artery or severe heart disease. If you become pregnant while undergoing treatment, you may need to discontinue the medication, so it’s crucial to follow your doctor's guidance.

Breastfeeding is not recommended while taking bromocriptine.

If you become pregnant during your treatment with bromocriptine, notify your doctor immediately.

How should I take Parlodel?

Take Parlodel strictly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not adjust the dosage without consultation, and adhere to the instructions on your prescription label. Your doctor may modify your dose occasionally to optimize your results.

Typically, Parlodel is taken twice daily with meals.

While on bromocriptine, you may require regular blood tests at your doctor's office, so ensure to attend follow-up appointments regularly.

While using this medication, you might experience heightened sexual desires, unusual gambling impulses, or other intense urges. Consult your doctor if you feel you are having any unusual or overwhelming urges while on Parlodel.

Some individuals taking medications for Parkinson's disease have reported developing skin cancer (melanoma). However, those with Parkinson's may already have a heightened risk for melanoma. Discuss this concern with your doctor and be aware of any skin changes; regular skin examinations may be necessary.

Store the medication at room temperature, protected from moisture, heat, and light.
