This medication is prescribed for individuals experiencing knee pain due to joint inflammation (osteoarthritis). It is typically recommended for patients who have not found relief from other treatments like acetaminophen, exercise, or physical therapy. Hyaluronate (also referred to as hyaluronan) resembles a naturally occurring substance in the joints. It may function by serving as a lubricant and shock absorber in the joint, facilitating smoother movement of the knee and reducing pain.
UsesBefore starting hyaluronate, and each time you receive a refill, consult the Patient Information Leaflet from your healthcare provider. If you have any questions, reach out to your doctor or pharmacist.
How to Use OstenilYour healthcare professional will administer this medication via injection into the affected joint, typically once a week. Avoid using skin disinfectants that contain ammonium salts (like benzalkonium chloride) at the injection site. There may be a need for your doctor to drain excess fluid from the joint prior to the injection. The dosage will depend on your medical condition and how you respond to treatment.
Hyaluronate should not be injected into a vein or artery due to the potential for increased side effects.
After receiving the hyaluronate injection, it is advisable to refrain from activities that could strain your knee (such as jogging, playing tennis, heavy lifting, or standing for more than an hour) for 48 hours.
Initially, you might experience increased pain and swelling in the knee after the injection. If the pain or swelling persists or worsens, contact your doctor promptly.
It’s crucial to adhere to the scheduled injections, as it may take up to three doses to experience the full benefits of the medication. Please inform your doctor if your condition remains unchanged or worsens.
Pain, swelling, redness, warmth, bruising at the injection site, or headaches may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist without delay.
Side EffectsKeep in mind that your doctor has prescribed this medication because they believe the benefits outweigh the risks of side effects. Many individuals using this treatment do not experience serious side effects.
Should you encounter severe side effects such as back pain, intense headache, rapid or pounding heartbeat, fever, or tingling skin, contact your doctor immediately.
While serious allergic reactions to this medication are rare, seek immediate medical assistance if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, including rash, itching or swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.
