SUBSTANCE Salbutamol ,

Salbutamol, commonly referred to as albuterol, is a medication that relaxes the medium and large airways in the lungs. It is primarily utilized to manage asthma, including asthma attacks, exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Additionally, it may be administered to address elevated blood potassium levels. Ventolin, a brand name for salbutamol, is typically delivered via an inhaler or nebulizer but is also offered in tablet and intravenous forms. The inhaled version generally begins to take effect within 15 minutes and its effects last for two to six hours.

Typical side effects include tremors, headaches, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, and anxiety. More serious side effects can involve worsened bronchospasm, irregular heart rhythms, and decreased blood potassium levels. The medication can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but its safety is not fully established. Salbutamol is classified as a short-acting β2 adrenergic receptor agonist, functioning by relaxing the smooth muscles in the airways.

Medical Uses

Ventolin is commonly prescribed for bronchospasm caused by various factors, including allergic asthma and exercise, and it is a frequent choice in rescue inhalers for immediate relief during asthma attacks. As a β2 agonist, salbutamol is also beneficial in obstetrics; intravenous salbutamol can act as a tocolytic agent to relax uterine smooth muscle, helping to postpone premature labor. Although it has advantages over medications like atosiban and ritodrine, its usage has increasingly been supplanted by the oral calcium channel blocker nifedipine, which is more effective and better tolerated.

Ventolin can also treat acute hyperkalemia by facilitating the movement of potassium into cells, thereby reducing blood potassium levels.

Adverse Effects

Common side effects include fine tremors, anxiety, headaches, muscle cramps, dry mouth, and palpitations. Other potential symptoms may encompass tachycardia, irregular heartbeats, skin flushing, and in rare cases, myocardial ischemia, as well as sleep disturbances and behavioral changes. Although infrequent, significant allergic reactions can occur, such as paradoxical bronchospasms, hives, angioedema, hypotension, and fainting. Prolonged use or high doses may lead to hypokalemia, which is particularly concerning for patients with kidney issues or those taking specific diuretics and xanthine derivatives.

Keep out of reach of children. For adult use only.
