What is Clarithromycin?
Clarithromycin is an antibiotic belonging to the macrolide class that combats bacterial infections in the body.
It is prescribed for various bacterial infections affecting the skin and respiratory tract.
Clarithromycin is also utilized alongside other medications to treat stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori.
Important Information
Complete the entire course of clarithromycin as prescribed, even if your symptoms improve before the infection is fully resolved. Missing doses can heighten the risk of developing infections that are resistant to antibiotics. This medication does not work against viral infections like the common cold or influenza.
Do not use this medication if you have a known allergy to clarithromycin or similar antibiotics, experienced jaundice or liver issues from this drug, or if you have liver or kidney disease while taking colchicine.
Inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking or any new ones you begin or stop using. Many medications can interact with clarithromycin, and some should not be combined.
Before Taking this Medication
You should avoid using clarithromycin if you are allergic to it or related medications such as azithromycin (Zithromax, Z-Pak, Zmax), erythromycin, or telithromycin, or if you have:
Certain medications can cause adverse effects when combined with clarithromycin. Your doctor may need to adjust your treatment plan if you are using any of the following drugs:
To ensure this medication is safe for you, inform your doctor if you have a history of:
Clarithromycin may pose risks to an unborn baby. Use effective contraceptive methods to prevent pregnancy while taking this medication and notify your doctor if you become pregnant.
How Should I Take Clarithromycin?
Take clarithromycin precisely as directed by your physician. Follow all instructions on your prescription label. Do not exceed or diminish the prescribed amount or duration of use.
Do not use this medication for any condition that hasn’t been evaluated by your doctor. Avoid sharing this medication with others, even if they display similar symptoms.
You can take the regular tablets and oral suspension (liquid) with or without food. However, the extended-release tablets should be taken with food.
Do not crush, chew, or break extended-release tablets; swallow them whole.
Typically, clarithromycin is prescribed for 7 to 14 days. Use the medication for the entire duration prescribed, even if your symptoms improve quickly, as skipping doses can lead to antibiotic-resistant infections. Clarithromycin is ineffective against viral infections such as the flu or common cold.
Store the medication in its original container at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light.
If your infection requires a combination of drugs, adhere to your doctor's instructions regarding all medications. Review the provided instructions for each medication and do not alter your dosage or schedule without consulting your doctor.
