Overview of Strattera and Its Uses:

Purpose of Strattera:

Strattera is a medication that contains atomoxetine, specifically designed to treat attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is applicable for:

  • Children aged six and older
  • Adolescents
  • Adults
  • Strattera is intended to be part of a comprehensive treatment strategy for ADHD, which should also include non-pharmaceutical interventions like counseling and behavioral therapy. It is not recommended for children under six since its efficacy and safety in this age group remain uncertain.

In adults, Strattera is indicated for ADHD when symptoms significantly impact daily functioning, including work or social interactions, especially if the symptoms were present during childhood.

    Mechanism of Action:

Strattera works by increasing levels of noradrenaline in the brain, a naturally occurring chemical that enhances focus and reduces impulsiveness and hyperactivity in those with ADHD. This medication is non-stimulant and poses no risk of addiction. It can take several weeks for users to notice significant improvements in symptoms.

    Understanding ADHD:

Children and adolescents with ADHD often experience:

  • Difficulty remaining still
  • Challenges in maintaining concentration
  • These challenges are not due to a lack of effort but may lead to issues in daily life, including learning difficulties and behavioral problems at home and school. Importantly, ADHD does not impair intelligence.

For adults with ADHD, similar difficulties continue, potentially resulting in challenges with:

  • Career responsibilities
  • Personal relationships
  • Self-esteem
  • Educational pursuits
  • Precautions Before Using Strattera:

Do NOT use Strattera if you:

  • Have an allergy to atomoxetine or any other components of the medicine (detailed in section 6)
  • Have recently taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) like phenelzine within the last two weeks, as combining these medications can lead to severe side effects or be life-threatening. You must wait at least 14 days after discontinuing Strattera before starting an MAOI.
  • Suffer from narrow-angle glaucoma (increased eye pressure)
  • Have serious heart conditions that could be aggravated by increased heart rate or blood pressure, which Strattera may cause
  • Experience significant issues with the blood vessels in your brain, such as a stroke or aneurysm
  • Have a tumor of the adrenal gland (phaeochromocytoma)
  • If any of these situations apply to you, do not take Strattera. Consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist if unsure, as Strattera may exacerbate these conditions.

    Warnings and Precautions:

Both children and adults should consider the following warnings before taking Strattera. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have:

  • Suicidal thoughts or tendencies
  • Heart problems, including heart defects or a rapid heartbeat—Strattera has been associated with increased heart rate and instances of sudden death in individuals with heart conditions
  • High blood pressure, as Strattera may further elevate it
  • Low blood pressure, which can lead to dizziness or fainting
  • Unusual fluctuations in blood pressure or heart rate
  • A history of cardiovascular issues or strokes
  • Liver problems, which might necessitate a lower dose
  • Psychotic symptoms (e.g., hallucinations or delusions)
  • Mania or heightened agitation
  • Aggressive or hostile feelings
  • A previous history of epilepsy or seizures, as Strattera could increase seizure frequency
  • Mood swings or significant sadness
  • Uncontrolled, repetitive movements or vocalizations
  • Inform your doctor or pharmacist if any of these apply to you before commencing treatment so they can monitor you effectively, as Strattera may worsen these issues.

    Pre-Treatment Evaluations:

Your physician will conduct certain assessments to determine whether Strattera is appropriate for you. This includes measuring your:

  • Blood pressure and heart rate before and during Strattera treatment
  • Height and weight, particularly in children and teenagers throughout the treatment period
  • Additionally, your doctor will discuss:

  • Any other medications you are currently taking
  • Family history of sudden, unexplained deaths
  • Any significant medical conditions (such as heart issues) in you or your family
  • Providing detailed information will enable your doctor to assess the suitability of Strattera for your treatment plan. Your doctor may also recommend further medical evaluations prior to initiating the medication.
