What is Clarithromycin?
Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that helps combat bacterial infections in the body.
It is prescribed for various bacterial infections, particularly those affecting the skin and respiratory tract. Additionally, clarithromycin is used in conjunction with other medications to treat stomach ulcers associated with Helicobacter pylori.
Important Information
It is essential to take clarithromycin for the entire duration prescribed, even if your symptoms improve before the infection is fully resolved. Missing doses could elevate the risk of developing an antibiotic-resistant infection. Note that this medication does not treat viral infections such as the common cold or flu.
You should avoid using this medication if you are allergic to clarithromycin or other similar antibiotics, have a history of jaundice or liver issues linked to this medicine, or if you suffer from liver or kidney disease while taking colchicine.
Inform your doctor about all your current medications and any that you begin or discontinue. Many drugs can interact with clarithromycin, and certain combinations should be avoided.
Before Taking This Medicine
Do not use clarithromycin if you are allergic to it or related medications such as azithromycin (Zithromax, Z-Pak, Zmax), erythromycin, or telithromycin, or if you have:
Several medications can lead to adverse effects when combined with clarithromycin. Your physician might need to adjust your treatment plan if you are taking any of the following:
To ensure clarithromycin is suitable for you, notify your doctor if you have ever had:
Clarithromycin may adversely affect an unborn baby; therefore, effective birth control is recommended while using this medication. Inform your doctor if you become pregnant.
How to Take Clarithromycin
Take clarithromycin strictly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Adhere to all instructions on your prescription label. Do not alter the dose or use it for a longer period than advised.
Avoid using this medication for any unverified conditions and do not share it with others, even if they exhibit similar symptoms.
You can take the standard tablets and oral suspension (liquid) with or without food. However, clarithromycin extended-release tablets should be taken alongside food.
Do not crush, chew, or break extended-release tablets; swallow them whole.
Typically, clarithromycin is prescribed for 7 to 14 days. Continue using this medication for the full prescribed duration, even if you notice improvement in your symptoms. Missing doses may heighten the risk of a resistant infection. Remember, clarithromycin is ineffective against viral infections like the flu or cold.
Store this medication in its original container at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light.
If your treatment involves multiple medications, follow all directions as provided by your doctor. Review the instructions included with each medication and do not modify your doses or schedule without consulting your doctor.
