Humira (Abbott Laboratories) injection is utilized for managing symptoms and inhibiting the advancement of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis and active ankylosing spondylitis. It is also approved for use in children aged 4 and older with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Additionally, Humira treats psoriatic arthritis, which results in joint pain and swelling, accompanied by scaly skin patches, often associated with the skin condition psoriasis. Humira can be prescribed alone or in combination with other medications (e.g., methotrexate).

This injection is also indicated for alleviating the symptoms of active Crohn's disease in adults who have not responded to other treatments, including infliximab. Furthermore, it is used for moderate to severe ulcerative colitis in patients who have not had success with other medications (such as azathioprine, corticosteroids, or 6-mercaptopurine).

Humira is also effective for treating chronic plaque psoriasis, a skin condition characterized by persistent red patches and white scales.

Humira is available only through a doctor's prescription.

How to Use Humira (Abbott Laboratories)

Adhere to the instructions provided on your prescription label. Avoid using this medication in amounts larger or smaller than advised or for a longer duration than recommended. Consistent use of Humira is necessary to maximize its benefits, and it's important to have your prescription refilled before running out.

The dosing schedule for Humira can vary significantly based on the condition being treated. You might require an injection bi-weekly or as many as four injections over two consecutive days. Follow your doctor’s dosing instructions closely.

Do not initiate Humira treatment if you exhibit signs of an infection (such as fever, chills, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, body aches, fatigue, cough with phlegm, shortness of breath, skin lesions, stomach discomfort, diarrhea, or painful urination). Contact your doctor for guidance.

Humira is administered via subcutaneous injection, and you may receive instructions on how to perform this at home. Do not self-administer if you are unsure about the correct technique for injection or disposal of needles and syringes. Avoid injecting Humira into areas of skin that are bruised, reddened, sensitive, or hardened.

Each prefilled syringe of Humira is for single use only; discard it after one use even if some medication remains. Do not use a prefilled syringe if it appears cloudy or contains particles—contact your pharmacist for a replacement.

Dispose of used needles and syringes responsibly, complying with local regulations. Utilize a puncture-proof "sharps" container for disposal (ask your pharmacist for details about obtaining and disposing of one). Keep this container out of reach of children and pets.

Humira may reduce the presence of blood cells that are essential for combating infections and enabling blood clotting, increasing your risk of bleeding from injuries or becoming ill due to exposure to sick individuals. Regular blood tests may be necessary. Serious and possibly life-threatening infections can arise during Humira treatment—seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms such as fever, chills, sore throat, or flu-like symptoms.

Inform your surgeon if you require surgery that you are currently using Humira.

If you have a history of hepatitis B, Humira may reactivate or worsen this condition. Regular blood tests will be needed to monitor your liver function during and after treatment.

Store Humira in the refrigerator, and when traveling with a prefilled syringe, keep it cool in a small cooler with an ice pack, shielding it from light. Do not remove the prefilled syringe from refrigeration until you are prepared to inject.

Avoid freezing Humira; discard any medication that has frozen.

Using Humira (Abbott Laboratories) Subcutaneously

Before beginning treatment, review the Medication Guide and Instructions for Use provided by your pharmacist each time you refill your prescription. If you have questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

If self-administering this medication, ensure you are familiar with all preparation and usage instructions from your healthcare professional and the product packaging.

Before use, visually inspect the product for any particles or discoloration; do not use if either is evident. Do not shake the solution.

Allow the medication to reach room temperature for 15 to 30 minutes before injection if it has been stored in the refrigerator. Do not use alternative methods, such as a microwave or hot water, to warm the medication.

Administer the injection as prescribed, typically under the skin of the thigh or abdomen every week or every other week. For specific conditions like psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or uveitis, a different initial dosing regimen or higher dosage may be prescribed. Follow your doctor's directions closely.

Prior to each injection, clean the injection site with rubbing alcohol. Rotate injection sites with each dose to minimize skin damage, ensuring new injections are at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) away from previous sites. Avoid injecting into any areas that are sore, bruised, reddened, or hardened.

Dosage is determined by your medical condition and response to treatment; in children, it is also based on weight.

Use Humira consistently for the best results. To help you remember your schedule, mark the date on the calendar when your next dose is due. Do not increase your dose or frequency of use beyond what is prescribed.

Notify your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens.
