What is dutasteride (Avodart)?
Dutasteride inhibits the transformation of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT plays a role in the progression of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Dutasteride is prescribed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men who have an enlarged prostate. This medication can enhance urinary flow and may decrease the likelihood of needing prostate surgery in the future.
Dutasteride is occasionally used in conjunction with another medication called tamsulosin (Flomax). Be sure to review the medication guide or patient instructions that come with each of your prescriptions.
Dutasteride may also be used for other purposes not mentioned in this guide.
How should I take dutasteride (Avodart)?
Take dutasteride exactly as your doctor has instructed. Do not take more or less than directed, or for a longer duration than recommended. Follow the instructions provided on your prescription label.
Take dutasteride with a full glass of water.
You can take dutasteride with or without food.
Avoid chewing, crushing, or opening the capsule. Swallow the capsule whole, as breaking it can irritate your lips, mouth, or throat.
It may take up to 6 months of treatment for your symptoms to improve. For optimal results, continue using the medication as prescribed. Do not discontinue dutasteride without consulting your doctor.
