Uses

This medication is used to alleviate knee pain in individuals suffering from joint inflammation (osteoarthritis). It is typically prescribed for patients who have not found relief from other treatments, such as acetaminophen, exercise, or physical therapy. Hyaluronate, also referred to as hyaluronan, resembles a naturally occurring substance in the joints. It may function by serving as a lubricant and shock absorber in the joint, facilitating smoother movement of the knee and reducing pain.

How to Use Hyalgan

Before starting treatment with hyaluronate and each time you receive a refill, read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your healthcare professional. If you have any inquiries, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

This medication will be administered by your doctor via injection into the affected joint, usually once a week. Do not use skin disinfectants containing ammonium salts (like benzalkonium chloride) for preparing the injection site. Your doctor might need to drain excess fluid from the joint before administering the injection. The dosage will be determined based on your specific medical condition and response to treatment.

Hyaluronate should not be injected into a vein or artery, as this may lead to heightened side effects.

After receiving a hyaluronate injection, it is advised to refrain from activities that could strain your knee (such as jogging, playing tennis, heavy lifting, or standing for over an hour) for 48 hours.

Initially, you may experience increased pain and swelling in the knee following the injection. If the pain or swelling persists or worsens, contact your doctor promptly.

It is crucial to adhere to the injection schedule. Full therapeutic effects may take up to three injections to manifest.

Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or becomes worse.

Side Effects

Possible side effects include pain, swelling, redness, warmth, bruising at the injection site, or headache. If any of these effects continue or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Keep in mind that your doctor has prescribed this medication under the belief that the benefits outweigh any potential risks. Many individuals using this medication do not experience serious side effects.

If you experience any severe side effects such as back pain, significant headache, rapid or pounding heartbeat, fever, or tingling skin, contact your doctor immediately.

While serious allergic reactions to this medication are uncommon, seek emergency medical assistance right away if you notice any signs of a serious allergic reaction, including rash, itching or swelling (particularly of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.
