What Is VIAGRA and How Is It Used?

VIAGRA is classified as a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, a group of medications that help relax blood vessels in the penis. This allows for increased blood flow when a man is sexually aroused. However, VIAGRA is effective only with sexual stimulation and should not be used if you do not have erectile dysfunction. It is not intended for use by women.

VIAGRA is prescribed for men experiencing erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence, which is characterized by the inability to achieve or maintain a sufficiently firm erection for sexual activity.

Important Considerations Before Using VIAGRA

- Are on nitrate medications, as combining them can lead to dangerously low blood pressure. Inform your doctor if you are on medications for angina or chest pain. - Use nitric oxide donors like amyl nitrite ("poppers"), as this can also result in harmful blood pressure drops. - Have an allergy to sildenafil or any other ingredient in VIAGRA. - Suffer from severe heart or liver conditions. - Recently had a stroke or heart attack, or have low blood pressure. - Have certain rare inherited eye conditions, including retinitis pigmentosa. - Have experienced vision loss due to non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION).

Do Not Take VIAGRA If You:

Notify your doctor if you have sickle cell anemia, leukemia, multiple myeloma, any penis deformities like Peyronie’s disease, or heart issues that may require special consideration before having sex. Also inform your doctor if you have a stomach ulcer or bleeding disorders like hemophilia.

Exercise Caution with VIAGRA:

If you notice a sudden decrease or loss of vision, stop taking VIAGRA immediately and consult a doctor.

VIAGRA should not be used with any other oral or topical erectile dysfunction treatments.

Considerations for Specific Populations

VIAGRA is not to be given to anyone under 18.

Children and Adolescents:

Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, as they may adjust your dosage.

Patients with Kidney or Liver Issues:

Interactions with Other Medications

Make sure to tell your healthcare provider if you're taking or have recently taken any other medications, including over-the-counter drugs. VIAGRA can interact adversely with certain medications, especially those for chest pain. In an emergency, inform medical personnel that you have taken VIAGRA, and when.

Combining VIAGRA with nitrates can lead to critical drops in blood pressure; similarly, using nitric oxide donors like amyl nitrite is not advised. If you're on protease inhibitors for HIV, your doctor might begin you on a reduced dose (25 mg) of VIAGRA.

If you're undergoing alpha-blocker therapy for high blood pressure or prostate issues, be cautious about dizziness, especially when standing up quickly after taking VIAGRA. It’s recommended to maintain a regular regimen of your alpha-blocker before starting VIAGRA, and your doctor may suggest a lower initial dose.

Taking VIAGRA with Food and Drink

You can take VIAGRA with or without food; however, a heavy meal may delay its effectiveness. Limit alcohol consumption before taking VIAGRA to enhance its effectiveness.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

VIAGRA is not approved for use in women.

Driving and Machinery Use

Since VIAGRA may cause dizziness or affect vision, be mindful of how you react to it before engaging in activities like driving or operating machinery.

Important Information About VIAGRA Ingredients

Contact your healthcare provider if you've been advised against certain sugars, like lactose, before taking VIAGRA.

How to Use VIAGRA

Follow your doctor’s instructions when taking VIAGRA, and consult if uncertain; the typical starting dose is 50 mg. Do not exceed one dose per day. Take VIAGRA approximately one hour before sexual activity and swallow the tablet whole with water.

If the effects of VIAGRA feel too strong or too weak, reach out to your doctor or pharmacist. VIAGRA requires sexual arousal to be effective and usually acts within half an hour to one hour, though it may take longer if taken after a large meal.

If VIAGRA does not result in an erection or if it is not sustained long enough for intercourse, contact your healthcare provider.

If You Take Too Much VIAGRA

Taking more than prescribed may heighten side effects without enhancing effectiveness. Do not exceed the dosage advised by your healthcare provider and consult them if you do.

Potential Side Effects

Like all medications, VIAGRA can cause side effects, which may be mild to moderate and temporary. Report any chest pains during or after sex as follows: - Sit in a semi-reclining position and try to calm yourself. - Avoid taking nitrates for chest pain. - Seek immediate medical help.

Serious allergic reactions are possible; contact your physician right away if you experience sudden wheezing, trouble breathing, dizziness, or swelling.

Prolonged and painful erections have been reported after using VIAGRA. If an erection lasts longer than four hours, seek medical assistance immediately. If you notice a sudden loss of vision, discontinue VIAGRA and consult your doctor.

Common side effects (affecting 1 in 10 patients) include headache, facial flushing, indigestion, vision abnormalities (such as color changes, light sensitivity, blurred vision), nasal congestion, and dizziness.

Uncommon side effects (affecting 1 in 1,000 patients) can include vomiting, skin rash, bleeding in the eyes, eye irritation, eye pain, double vision, and a rapid heartbeat.

Rare side effects (affecting 1 in 10,000 patients) may include high/low blood pressure, fainting, stroke, and sudden hearing loss.

Additional side effects reported post-marketing include heart complications. It’s unclear whether these were directly caused by VIAGRA. Serious adverse skin reactions have also been documented.

Report any severe side effects or unlisted symptoms to your doctor.
