SUBSTANCE Dydrogesterone ,

Duphaston is a medication that contains dydrogesterone as its active ingredient. It is classified as a progesterone agonist (female sex hormone) and is used to lower the risk of endometrial hyperplasia.

This medication is prescribed for the following conditions:

  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Dysmenorrhea (painful periods)
  • Endometriosis
  • Infertility
  • When used alongside estrogen, Duphaston may also help treat secondary amenorrhea (absence of menstrual periods for six months or longer) and can address heavy and irregular bleeding.

    Precautions

Duphaston is contraindicated in the following situations:

  • Individuals allergic to dydrogesterone or similar medications. If you experience allergy symptoms, such as:
  • skin rash,
  • itchy skin,
  • redness,
  • swelling, or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately.

  • Those with deep vein thrombosis (a blood vessel blockage).

  • Patients with cancers that depend on progesterone or estrogen.
  • Individuals with unexplained bleeding.
  • Patients with liver dysfunction. As this medication can potentially harm the liver, contact your doctor right away if you notice symptoms like:
  • pain in the right upper abdomen,
  • loss of appetite,
  • dark urine,
  • jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), among others.

  • People suffering from depression.

  • Patients with porphyria.
  • While using this medication, you should conduct regular breast self-exams due to an increased risk of breast cancer when combined with estrogen.

Use of Duphaston During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Duphaston should not be used during pregnancy unless specifically prescribed by a physician.

This medication can enter breast milk, so breastfeeding is not recommended while taking Duphaston.

    How to Use

Your doctor will determine the appropriate dosage for you. Never self-medicate.

Take the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush or chew it.

    Drug Interactions

Avoid using Duphaston with the following medications:

  • Antiepileptic drugs such as:
  • carbamazepine,
  • phenytoin,
  • phenobarbital, among others. Using these with Duphaston may lower its blood levels and reduce its effectiveness.

  • HIV medications, such as:

  • ritonavir,
  • indinavir,
  • saquinavir, and others.

  • Herbal products like St. John's wort, sage, and ginkgo biloba, as they can also reduce Duphaston levels and its efficacy.

Inform your doctor about all medications and herbal supplements you are taking.
