Dropoetin is prescribed for the management of anemia linked to chronic kidney failure in both pediatric and adult patients undergoing hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

It is also indicated for treating severe renal-origin anemia with clinical symptoms in adult patients who have kidney insufficiency but are not yet on dialysis.

Additionally, Dropoetin is used to address anemia and reduce the need for blood transfusions in adult cancer patients (excluding those with myeloid malignancies) receiving chemotherapy.

Dropoetin is indicated for adult patients infected with HIV who are receiving zidovudine treatment and who have endogenous Dropoetin levels at or below 500 mU/ml.

In adults, Dropoetin is utilized to support autologous blood collection in predeposit programs, thus minimizing the likelihood of requiring allogeneic blood transfusions in patients with moderate anemia (with hematocrit levels of 33-39%, hemoglobin levels between 10-13 g/dL, and no iron deficiency) scheduled for major elective surgeries, especially if they are likely to need more blood than can be collected through autologous methods without Dropoetin. Treatment should be considered only when blood conservation options are either unavailable or inadequate for surgeries anticipated to require 4 or more units for females or 5 or more units for males.

Dropoetin is also indicated to enhance red blood cell production during the perisurgical period to reduce the need for allogeneic blood transfusions and rectify postoperative anemia in adult patients who are not iron deficient undergoing major elective orthopedic surgeries. Its use should be limited to patients with moderate anemia (e.g., hemoglobin levels of 10-13 g/dL) without access to an autologous donation program and who are expected to experience moderate blood loss (900 to 1800 ml).

Additionally, Dropoetin is indicated for the treatment of anemia in patients with Low or Intermediate-1 risk Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), with candidates for therapy having a hemoglobin level below 10 g/dL.
