What is Ciprofloxacin?

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class. It works by combating bacterial infections in the body and is utilized to treat various bacterial infections such as skin, bone, and joint infections, respiratory or sinus infections, urinary tract infections, and particular types of diarrhea. Additionally, it is employed for treating gonorrhea.

Moreover, ciprofloxacin is prescribed for individuals who have been exposed to anthrax or certain forms of plague.

This medication should be reserved for infections that cannot be effectively addressed with safer antibiotics.

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics have the potential to cause severe or life-altering side effects that may be irreversible, like tendon ruptures or nerve issues.

Important Information

Ciprofloxacin can lead to significant side effects, including tendon issues, nerve damage, serious changes in mood or behavior, and low blood sugar.

If you experience symptoms such as headaches, excessive hunger, irritability, numbness, tingling, burning sensations, confusion, agitation, paranoia, memory or concentration problems, thoughts of suicide, or sudden pain or movement difficulties in your joints, discontinue use immediately and contact your doctor.

In rare instances, ciprofloxacin may harm your aorta, potentially resulting in severe bleeding or death. Seek emergency medical assistance if you experience severe and persistent pain in your chest, stomach, or back.

You might not be able to take ciprofloxacin if you have a muscle disorder. Inform your doctor if you have a history of myasthenia gravis.

Before Taking This Medication

Do not take ciprofloxacin if you are allergic to it or if you are also using:

  • Tizanidine
  • Other fluoroquinolones (such as gemifloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, or ofloxacin)
  • Theophylline
  • Ciprofloxacin can result in swelling or tearing of tendons, particularly the Achilles tendon. This side effect can manifest during treatment or even months after discontinuation. The risk of tendon issues may be heightened in certain populations, including children, older adults, those using steroids, or individuals who have undergone organ transplants.

To ensure this medication is suitable for you, inform your doctor if you have a history of:

  • Tendon or bone issues, arthritis, or other joint conditions (especially in children)
  • Blood circulation disorders, aneurysms, or arteries that are narrowed or hardened
  • Heart problems or high blood pressure
  • Genetic conditions such as Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
  • Diabetes
  • Muscle or nerve disorders (like myasthenia gravis)
  • Kidney disease
  • Seizures or epilepsy
  • Head injuries or brain tumors
  • Long QT syndrome (in yourself or a family member)
  • Low potassium levels in your blood (hypokalemia)
  • Do not administer this medication to a child without medical consultation.

The effects of this medication on an unborn baby are not fully understood. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant.

You should not breast-feed while taking this medication.

    How to Take Ciprofloxacin

Take ciprofloxacin exactly as your doctor prescribes. Adhere to all instructions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets.

You can take ciprofloxacin with or without food, ensuring you do so at the same time daily.

Swallow the extended-release tablet whole; do not crush, chew, or break it.

Complete the full prescribed course of ciprofloxacin, even if your symptoms improve quickly. Missing doses can heighten the risk of developing a medication-resistant infection. This medication is not effective against viral infections like the flu or the common cold.

Do not share ciprofloxacin with others.

Store the medication at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
