What is ciprofloxacin?
Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class that combats bacterial infections in the body. It is effective against various bacterial infections, including those affecting the skin, bones, joints, respiratory system, sinuses, urinary tract, and specific types of diarrhea. Additionally, it can be used to treat gonorrhea.
Ciprofloxacin is also indicated for individuals who have been exposed to anthrax or certain forms of plague.
This antibiotic should only be used for infections that cannot be effectively treated with safer alternatives.
Fluoroquinolone antibiotics may lead to serious or disabling side effects that might not be reversible, such as tendon ruptures or nerve damage.
Important Information
Ciprofloxacin can lead to serious side effects, which may include tendon issues, nerve damage, significant mood or behavioral changes, or low blood sugar levels.
If you experience symptoms such as headache, hunger, irritability, numbness, tingling, burning pain, confusion, agitation, paranoia, memory or concentration problems, suicidal thoughts, or sudden pain or movement issues in your joints, discontinue this medication and contact your doctor immediately.
In rare instances, ciprofloxacin could cause damage to your aorta, potentially resulting in severe bleeding or death. Seek emergency medical attention if you experience intense and persistent pain in your chest, stomach, or back.
People with muscle disorders may not be able to take ciprofloxacin. Inform your doctor if you have a history of myasthenia gravis.
Before taking this medication
Ciprofloxacin should not be used if you are allergic to it or if you meet any of the following criteria:
Ciprofloxacin may cause tendon swelling or tearing, particularly in the Achilles tendon. This can occur during treatment or several months after discontinuation. Tendon issues may be more likely in certain individuals (including children and older adults, those taking steroid medications, or organ transplant recipients).
To ensure this medication is appropriate for you, disclose any of the following to your doctor:
Do not administer this medication to a child without consulting a doctor.
The effects of this medication on an unborn baby are unknown; inform your doctor if you are pregnant.
Avoid breastfeeding while taking this medication.
How should I take ciprofloxacin?
Take ciprofloxacin exactly as directed by your physician. Adhere to all instructions on your prescription label and read any medication guides or information sheets provided.
Ciprofloxacin can be taken with or without food and should be taken at the same time each day.
Swallow the extended-release tablet whole; do not crush, chew, or break it.
Complete the entire prescribed course of ciprofloxacin, even if you feel better before finishing the medication. Skipping doses may heighten the risk of developing a medication-resistant infection. This antibiotic is ineffective against viral infections such as the flu or the common cold.
Do not share ciprofloxacin with anyone else.
Store it at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
