What is ciprofloxacin?
Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class, which combats bacterial infections within the body. It is prescribed for a variety of bacterial infections, such as skin infections, infections of the bones and joints, respiratory or sinus infections, urinary tract infections, and specific kinds of diarrhea. Additionally, it is utilized for treating gonorrhea.
Ciprofloxacin is also administered to individuals who have been exposed to anthrax or certain types of plague.
This antibiotic should only be prescribed for infections that cannot be managed with a safer alternative.
Fluoroquinolone antibiotics can lead to severe or disabling side effects that may be irreversible, including tendon ruptures or nerve damage.
Important Information
Ciprofloxacin can lead to serious side effects, including issues with tendons, nerve damage, significant mood or behavioral changes, or low blood sugar levels.
If you experience symptoms such as headache, hunger, irritability, numbness, tingling, burning sensation, confusion, agitation, paranoia, memory or concentration difficulties, suicidal thoughts, or sudden joint pain or movement difficulties, discontinue the medication and contact your doctor immediately.
In rare instances, ciprofloxacin may cause damage to the aorta, resulting in potentially life-threatening bleeding. Seek emergency medical attention if you experience severe and persistent chest, stomach, or back pain.
You may not be eligible to take ciprofloxacin if you have a muscle disorder. Inform your doctor if you have a history of myasthenia gravis.
Before Taking This Medicine
Do not use ciprofloxacin if you are allergic to it, or if:
Ciprofloxacin can lead to swelling or tearing of tendons (the connective fibers between bones and muscles), particularly the Achilles tendon in the heel. These issues can arise during treatment or even months after discontinuation of the medication. Certain individuals (children, older adults, those on steroid medications, or organ transplant recipients) may have a higher risk of tendon problems.
