What is Ciprofloxacin?

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class (pronounced flor-o-KWIN-o-lone) that is effective against bacteria in the body. It is prescribed for various bacterial infections, such as skin infections, infections of the bones and joints, respiratory or sinus infections, urinary tract infections, and certain types of diarrhea. Additionally, it is used to treat gonorrhea.

Ciprofloxacin is also utilized for individuals who may have been exposed to anthrax or particular forms of plague.

This medication should only be prescribed for infections that cannot be effectively treated with safer antibiotics.

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics, including ciprofloxacin, have the potential to cause serious or disabling side effects that may not be reversible, including tendon ruptures or nerve damage.

Important Information

Ciprofloxacin may lead to severe side effects, which can include tendon issues, nerve injury, significant changes in mood or behavior, or low blood sugar.

Immediately discontinue use and contact your doctor if you experience symptoms such as headaches, hunger, irritability, numbness, tingling, burning sensations, confusion, agitation, paranoia, memory or concentration difficulties, suicidal thoughts, or sudden pain or movement issues related to your joints.

In rare instances, ciprofloxacin can cause aortic damage, which can result in severe bleeding or death. Seek emergency medical attention if you experience intense and persistent pain in your chest, abdomen, or back.

You may not be able to take ciprofloxacin if you have a muscle disorder. Inform your doctor if you have a history of myasthenia gravis.

Before Taking This Medication

Do not use ciprofloxacin if you are allergic to it or if you:

  • Are taking tizanidine
  • Are allergic to other fluoroquinolones (such as gemifloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, etc.)
  • Are also taking theophylline
  • Ciprofloxacin may cause tendon swelling or tearing, particularly in the Achilles tendon, either during treatment or several months after discontinuation. Those at increased risk include children, older adults, individuals taking steroids, or those who have undergone an organ transplant.

To ensure the safety of this medication, inform your doctor if you have a history of:

  • Tendon or bone issues, arthritis, or other joint conditions (especially in children)
  • Blood circulation disorders, aneurysms, or artery narrowing/hardening
  • Heart conditions or high blood pressure
  • Genetic disorders like Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
  • Diabetes
  • Muscle or nerve disorders, such as myasthenia gravis
  • Kidney problems
  • Seizures or epilepsy
  • Head injuries or brain tumors
  • Long QT syndrome (in you or a family member)
  • Low potassium levels in your blood (hypokalemia)
  • Do not give this medication to a child without consulting a healthcare professional.

It is not known if ciprofloxacin can harm an unborn baby, so let your doctor know if you are pregnant.

You should avoid breastfeeding while taking this medication.

    How Should I Take Ciprofloxacin?

Take ciprofloxacin exactly as directed by your doctor. Adhere to all guidance on your prescription label and review all medication guides or instruction sheets.

Ciprofloxacin can be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day.

Swallow the extended-release tablet whole—do not crush, chew, or break it.

Complete the full course of ciprofloxacin as prescribed, even if you notice improvement in your symptoms. Missing doses can lead to an increased risk of developing antibiotic-resistant infections. This medication is not effective against viral infections like the flu or the common cold.

Do not share ciprofloxacin with others.

Store it at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
