Betaserc is a medication that contains betahistine as its active ingredient. It is part of a category of drugs used to treat vertigo, a condition characterized by a sensation of dizziness and imbalance, or the feeling that surrounding objects are moving when they are stationary. Betaserc works by enhancing blood flow to the brain, particularly in the inner ear, which plays a critical role in maintaining balance, thereby alleviating dizziness.

This medication is also utilized to treat tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and Meniere's disease (a disorder affecting the inner ear). While Betaserc can decrease the frequency and intensity of vertigo episodes, it cannot completely eliminate them.

Precautions

Betaserc should not be used in the following circumstances:

  • In individuals who are allergic to betahistine or similar medications.
  • In those with a pheochromocytoma (a type of tumor in the adrenal gland).
  • Caution is advised when administering this medication to patients with asthma or those suffering from peptic ulcers (gastric or duodenal).

    Use During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Betaserc may only be prescribed during pregnancy if the potential benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the child, as there is insufficient data on its safety during pregnancy.

It is unclear if this medication is excreted in breast milk; thus, it is advisable to refrain from breastfeeding while taking Betaserc.

    How to Use

    Available dosage forms include:

  • Betaserc 8 mg,
  • Betaserc 16 mg,
  • Betaserc 24 mg.
  • The typical starting dose is 8 mg three times a day, which can be increased to a maximum of 48 mg per day as needed until the desired effect is achieved.

This medication should not be administered to children under 18 years of age.

Swallow the tablets whole without chewing, as doing so may impact their effectiveness. Take the medication after meals to minimize the risk of stomach discomfort.

Betaserc can be used for extended periods (up to 6 months to a year).

If you continue to experience dizziness, avoid driving or operating machinery.

Some healthcare providers suggest that lifestyle modifications (such as quitting smoking, eating healthily, and engaging in regular physical activity) can significantly aid in the treatment of vertigo.
