Betaserc is a medication that contains the active ingredient betahistine, which is part of a class of drugs used to treat vertigo. Vertigo is a condition characterized by feelings of dizziness and imbalance or the sensation that surrounding objects are moving when they are stationary. Betaserc enhances blood circulation in the brain, particularly in the inner ear—an essential component of our balance system—and thereby alleviates dizziness.
In addition to vertigo, it is also used to treat tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and Meniere's disease (a disorder affecting the inner ear).
While Betaserc can reduce the frequency and intensity of vertigo episodes, it cannot entirely prevent them.
PrecautionsThis medication should not be taken in certain situations, including:
Extra caution is required for patients with asthma or gastric/duodenal ulcers when using this drug.
Use During Pregnancy and BreastfeedingBetaserc may be prescribed during pregnancy only if the benefits to the mother outweigh any potential risks to the fetus, as there is insufficient data regarding its safety during pregnancy.
It is unknown if Betaserc passes into breast milk, so it is advisable to refrain from breastfeeding while using this medication.
How to UseBetaserc is available in several dosage forms:
The typical starting dose is 8 mg taken three times a day. This may be increased up to a maximum of 48 mg per day to achieve the desired result.
Betaserc is not recommended for children under 18.
Swallow the tablet whole without chewing, as this may alter its effectiveness. It is best taken after meals to minimize stomach discomfort.
This medication may be used for extended periods (6 months to 1 year).
If you continue to experience dizziness, avoid operating vehicles or machinery.
Some healthcare providers suggest that lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy diet, and increasing physical activity, could considerably enhance the management of vertigo.
