Yaz is mainly a contraceptive pill, but it can also be effective in treating acne and other hormone-related conditions. It contains both estrogen and progesterone, which are crucial for maintaining a healthy reproductive system. Yaz can help regulate menstrual cycles, reduce menstrual flow, and lower the risk of ovarian cysts.

Yaz is approved for managing the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) in women who opt for oral contraceptives. However, its effectiveness for PMDD after using it for more than three menstrual cycles has not been assessed.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-4th edition (DSM-IV), key characteristics of PMDD include significantly depressed mood, anxiety or tension, mood swings, and ongoing anger or irritability. Additional symptoms may involve a lack of interest in typical activities, trouble concentrating, fatigue, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, and a feeling of losing control. Physical symptoms can include breast tenderness, headaches, joint and muscle pain, bloating, and weight gain. These symptoms typically arise during the luteal phase and diminish a few days after menstruation begins, significantly impacting work, school, and social interactions. Diagnosis is made by healthcare professionals using DSM-IV guidelines, assessing symptoms over at least two menstrual cycles while excluding other cyclical mood disorders.

Yaz has not been studied for the treatment of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

Instructions for Taking Yaz: Take one tablet daily at the same time to maintain effectiveness. Missing pills or incorrect usage may increase the failure rate. For optimal contraceptive and PMDD benefits, Yaz must be taken precisely as instructed, following the order indicated on the blister pack. If a single pill is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered.

How to Start Yaz: Patients should start Yaz either on the first day of their menstrual period (Day 1 Start) or on the first Sunday following the onset of their menstrual period (Sunday Start).
