What is Amoxicillin?

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic belonging to the penicillin class that is effective against bacteria.

It is prescribed for a variety of bacterial infections, including tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and infections affecting the ear, nose, throat, skin, or urinary tract.

In some cases, amoxicillin is used alongside another antibiotic called clarithromycin (Biaxin) to treat stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. This combination may also be paired with a medication to reduce stomach acid.

Important Information

Amoxicillin can decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills. Consult your doctor about alternative non-hormonal contraceptive methods (such as condoms, diaphragms, or spermicides) to avoid pregnancy while taking this medication. It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment, even if your symptoms improve before the infection is fully resolved. This antibiotic does not work against viral infections, such as the common cold or flu. Never share this medication with others, even if they have similar symptoms.

Antibiotic usage may lead to diarrhea, which can occur while taking amoxicillin or within months after discontinuation. This may indicate a new infection. If you experience severe or bloody diarrhea, stop taking amoxicillin and contact your doctor. Do not take anti-diarrheal medications unless instructed by your physician.

Before Taking This Medicine

Do not take amoxicillin if you are allergic to any penicillin antibiotics, including ampicillin, dicloxacillin, oxacillin, penicillin, or ticarcillin.

To ensure amoxicillin is appropriate for you, inform your doctor if you have: - Asthma - Liver or kidney disease - Mononucleosis (commonly referred to as "mono") - A history of antibiotic-related diarrhea - Food or drug allergies

Amoxicillin is not expected to harm an unborn child, but you should inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during treatment.

How Should I Take Amoxicillin?

Take amoxicillin exactly as directed by your physician. Adhere to all instructions on your prescription label. Do not alter the dosage or frequency without guidance.

Take this medication consistently each day at the same time.

The Moxatag brand of amoxicillin should be taken with food or within one hour following a meal.

Certain formulations of amoxicillin may be taken with or without food. Check your medicine label for specific instructions.

If you are using liquid amoxicillin, shake it well before measuring a dose as per the label's directions.

Use the dosing syringe provided, or a special measuring spoon or cup, to measure liquid medicine. If you do not have a measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. You can place the liquid directly on your tongue or mix it with water, milk, baby formula, fruit juice, or ginger ale. Drink the entire mixture immediately and do not save any for later.

Chew the chewable tablet completely before swallowing.

Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet; swallow it whole.

If you are on long-term amoxicillin therapy, you may need regular blood tests, and your kidney and liver functions might need monitoring.

If you are using amoxicillin with clarithromycin and/or lansoprazole for ulcer treatment, follow all medication instructions carefully. Read the provided medication guide or patient instructions, and do not adjust your dosage or schedule without consulting your doctor.

Complete the full prescribed duration of treatment. Symptoms may improve before the infection is fully cleared. Missing doses could also heighten the risk of developing antibiotic-resistant infections. Remember that amoxicillin is ineffective against viral infections such as the flu or common cold.

Do not share this medication with anyone else, even if they present similar symptoms.

This medication may yield unusual results in some medical tests. Inform any healthcare provider treating you that you are taking amoxicillin.

Store the medication at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light.
