What is amoxicillin?
Amoxicillin is an antibiotic belonging to the penicillin class that works against bacterial infections.
It is commonly prescribed for various bacterial infections, including tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and infections affecting the ear, nose, throat, skin, or urinary tract.
Additionally, amoxicillin may be prescribed in conjunction with another antibiotic, clarithromycin (known as Biaxin), to treat stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infections. This combination may also include a medication to reduce stomach acid.
Important Information
Amoxicillin may reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. It is advisable to consult your doctor about alternative non-hormonal birth control methods (such as condoms, diaphragms, or spermicides) to avoid pregnancy while using this medication. Be sure to take the full course as prescribed, even if symptoms start to improve before the infection is fully resolved. Note that amoxicillin is ineffective against viral infections, such as the common cold or flu. Do not share this medication with others, even if they exhibit similar symptoms.
Taking antibiotics can lead to diarrhea, which may occur during treatment or within a few months after finishing the course. If you experience watery or bloody diarrhea, discontinue use and contact your doctor. Avoid using anti-diarrheal medications unless directed by your doctor.
Before Taking This Medicine
Do not take amoxicillin if you have an allergy to any penicillin antibiotics, including ampicillin, dicloxacillin, oxacillin, penicillin, or ticarcillin.
To determine the safety of amoxicillin for you, inform your doctor if you have:
Amoxicillin is generally considered safe for pregnant women. Notify your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant while using this medication.
How Should I Take Amoxicillin?
Follow your doctor's directions carefully when taking amoxicillin, adhering to the instructions on your prescription label. Do not exceed or reduce the recommended dosage or duration of treatment.
Take the medication at the same time each day.
The Moxatag version of amoxicillin should be consumed with food, or within one hour after a meal.
Certain forms of amoxicillin can be taken with or without food; check your medication label for specific instructions.
For liquid forms of the medication, shake well before measuring a dose. Use the provided dosage syringe, measuring spoon, or medicine cup for accuracy. If you lack a measuring device, request one from your pharmacist. You may take the liquid directly or mix it with water, milk, baby formula, fruit juice, or ginger ale, and consume all of it immediately. Do not save any mixture for later.
Chew the chewable tablet fully before swallowing.
Do not crush, chew, or break extended-release tablets; swallow them whole.
If taking amoxicillin for an extended period, you may need regular blood tests to monitor kidney and liver functions.
If combining amoxicillin with clarithromycin and/or lansoprazole for stomach ulcer treatment, follow all medication directions. Read the medication guide provided with each prescription, and consult your doctor before altering any doses or schedules.
Use this medication for the entire prescribed duration. Symptoms may improve before the infection is eliminated, and missing doses could increase the risk of infections resistant to antibiotics. Remember, amoxicillin is ineffective against viral infections, such as the flu or common cold.
Do not share this medication with anyone, even if they have similar symptoms.
This medication may affect certain medical tests, so inform any healthcare provider treating you that you are currently using amoxicillin.
Store the medication at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light.
