Betaserc is a medication that contains betahistine, an active ingredient used to treat vertigo. Vertigo is a condition characterized by dizziness, a feeling of being unbalanced, or the sensation that objects around you are moving when they are not. Betaserc enhances cerebral blood flow, including circulation to the inner ear, which is crucial for maintaining balance, thereby alleviating dizziness.
Additionally, it is prescribed for tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and Meniere’s disease (a disorder of the inner ear).
While this medication decreases the frequency and intensity of vertigo episodes, it cannot completely prevent them.
PrecautionsBetaserc should not be used in the following situations:
Caution is recommended for use in patients with asthma or those with gastric or duodenal ulcers.
Use During Pregnancy and BreastfeedingBetaserc may be administered during pregnancy only if the potential benefit to the mother exceeds the risks to the fetus, as there is insufficient data regarding its safety during pregnancy.
It is unknown whether betahistine passes into breast milk, so it is advisable to avoid breastfeeding while taking this medication.
How to UseDosage is available in the following forms:
The typical starting dose is 8 mg taken three times daily, which may be increased to a maximum of 48 mg per day, depending on the desired effect.
Children under 18 should not take this medication.
The tablets should be swallowed whole without chewing, as this may affect their efficacy. It is recommended to take the medication after meals to prevent stomach upset.
Betaserc can be taken over extended periods (from 6 months to 1 year) as needed.
If you continue to experience dizziness, refrain from driving or operating machinery.
Some healthcare providers suggest that lifestyle changes—such as quitting smoking, eating healthy, and being physically active—can enhance the treatment of vertigo.
